Hiawatha cancels Thursday due to heat

July 05, 2012 | Print View

Officials with Sarnia, Ont.'s Hiawatha Horse Park have announced that the schooling and qualifying sessions, and the track's pari-mutuel card of live racing scheduled for Thursday, July 5, have been cancelled. The cancellations have come due to high temperatures in Sarnia.

The temperatures with humidity are expected to be around 108 Fahrenheit during the time of the races.

After consultation with the local Ontario Racing Commission vet, the ORC's head vet and the Ontario Harness Horseman's Association deemed the conditions to be unsafe for the horses and the horsepeople.

Hiawatha officials have said that racing at the track will resume Saturday.
