High winds caused the last five races of the Sunday program at the Delaware County Fair to be cancelled, and later the entire fairgrounds lost power, prompting the evacuation of the grounds.

Strong winds from from the remains of Hurricane Ike picked up throughout the day on Sunday and eventually caused racing officials to deem conditions unsafe to conduct racing. At their peak the winds were estimated at 40-50 miles per hour.

The cancelled stakes races (the Ohio Breeders Championships and the Fouts Memorial Pace) will be moved to 12 noon on Monday, September 15. The original Monday card will be contested at approximately 1 pm.

OBC Filly Trot Contested

Two divisions of the Ohio Breeders Championship for sophomore filly trotters were contested.

In the first $19,859 division, Norma’s Rose (Aaron Merriman) found enough room late in the stretch to edge Britt Van (Kyle Ater). The Master Lavec lass is trained by Scott Cox for Jack Tramonte of Wadsworth, Ohio. The victory in 2:00 was her sixth of the year in 13 seasonal starts.

In the second division, Southern Jade (Ray Paver) scored in a lifetime best 1:59.2. The sophomore daughter of Master Lavec is owned by James B. Bianchi of Columbus, Ohio and trained by Hugh Beatty Jr.
