Hillary came up a winner at The Red Mile Tuesday afternoon, but not the former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton; it was the 2-year-old filly pacer Hillary, who crossed the finish line first for the first time in her career with a 1:55 victory in a $12,000 late-closing event. It was the second time the daughter of Jenna's Beach Boy stood in the winner's circle but her first trip at Springfield, Ill., came when she was placed first from second in the $30,000 Review.
Driven by Ron Pierce Tuesday, Hillary got out last in the seven-filly field but was tipped to the outside shortly past the :28.3 quarter. Despite being able to see all her rivals from the rear of the pack, nobody pulled to give cover. Hillary charged up on the outside after the leading Credit Rating and Mike Lachance and finally came up alongside turning for home.
Hillary put away the leader and then fended off the charge of the Tim Tetrick-driven Real Appealing--who had followed her cover--to the wire. CC Dreamer was third for Peter Wrenn.
A $7,000 yearling purchase by Ed Teefy, Hillary is out of the Jate Lobell mare GIrl Stuff, a $326,753 winner on the track whose biggest victory was the 1993 New York Sire Stakes championship for 2-year-old filly pacers at Yonkers. Hillary was originally named Teeny Weeny Bikini when she went through the sale ring from breeder Winbak Farm.
Hillary is trained by Donna Ozment, the mother of Erv Miller assistant trainer Tony Alagna. With her second career victory--four-fifths of a second off her 2p1 win at Springfield--she increased her earnings to $30,104.
