Hitchiker, a winner of eight straight and 18 of his 23 career outings, looms the solid favorite in tonight's Cal-Expo $7,700 Open Trot. Set to face off against him are KD Rowdy One, Easter Call, I Look Special and British Columbia. A 4-year-old son of Tulane, Hitchiker goes about his business for the Desomer Stables, with Vickie Desomer training and Etienne Desomer handling the lines. He is just shy of the $200,000 earnings plateau with a 1:54 mark that was set last season at the Meadowlands.
The homebred trotter has made a clean sweep of the stakes races for his division and comes into this assignment eyeing his ninth straight trip to the charmed enclosure. He has left little doubt in his four victories this season, going coast-to-coast on each occasion and never looking like a loser at any point.
Hitchiker’s most recent start came on July 10 and he was sent off the 2-5 choice under winners-over conditions. Desomer sent him right to the top where they were able to carve out the fractions without challenge, then turned it on in the stretch to prevail by 5 1/4 lengths in a 1:56.4 performance.
British Columbia may prove the main rival. Steve Hyman reins and trains the homebred British Sterling mare for Alan Kirschenbaum and she is fresh from a solid victory that saw her closing in :28.3 to seal the deal. She is closing in on $140,000 in earnings with a 1:56.2 lifetime mark from last year. (Cal-Expo)
