National season’s leader Hogies Cam, a 10-year-old altered son of Camluck, won for the 21st time this year when Jordan Stratton guided him to a three length victory in a time of 1:59.4 on Thursday at Monticello Raceway. The pacer continues to be the winningest horse in North America this year. With his triumph Hogies Cam now leads runner-up Special Character by four wins, 21-17. The pacer, who earlier this year established a new Monticello Raceway record of 10 consecutive victories, needs only one more win to erase the mark for most wins in a season at the Mighty M, a record set by Golden Storm GB during the 1986 season. As the wings of the starting gate folded, Billy Parker Jr. sent Mister Dale N to the lead and when Billy Dobson came alongside with Gilt Edge, Parker played hardball and kept Dodson on the limb by the quarter in :27.4, at which point Jordan Stratton had Hogies Cam tight on Parker’s back. Gilt Edge was all through before the half, which was paced in :58.4, and when Mister Dale N faded up the backstretch Stratton moved Hogies Cam to the front and the old timer paced home without any serious challenge to turn back Bryans Diamond (Greg Merton). When asked for a comment after Hogies Cam’s victory, trainer Bob Beauregard chirped, “I ain’t sayin’ nothing; the last time I did (bragged) Hogies Cam went on a six-week drought.” Trained by Beauregard for Charles Strukel, Hogies Cam, despite being a claimer, has been named “Horse of the Year” at Monticello Raceway by the local scribes and Strukel and Beauregard will receive that award at the Monticello-Goshen Chapter USHWA Awards banquet on Sunday, Oct. 26.
