Holiday Road, the Peter Haughton Memorial winner, encountered some bad luck during his first appearance at The Red Mile on Friday morning as he made a break before the gate folded. Driven by his trainer, Greg Peck, the son of Yankee Glide was pulled up in the first turn due to broken equipment.
A broken Buxton on the harness was said to be the cause of the colt’s break. Peck said that he pulled the horse up thinking they might let him go in a later qualifier; however, Kentucky rules state that a horse can only be entered in one qualifying race a day.
“The judges have been quite cooperative, and it wasn’t their fault, but it really was unfortunate, that’s for sure.” Peck said. “He feels good, he has been really good, today was much a surprise to me and no one likes to see that happen. Our plan is still to go to the Simpson and the Bluegrass.”
The horse seemed unscathed as he went back out on the track shortly after the mishap, following an equipment change, of course, to train a mile around 1:59.
Given that all goes well on his second attempt on Tuesday morning, the colt will be aiming for the Simpson Stakes. He will be skipping the $500,000 (est.) Wellwood Memorial at Mohawk. The Simpson is slated for Sept. 21, followed by the Bluegrass on Oct. 1 and the International Stallion Stakes on Oct. 8, all of which will be held at The Red Mile.
