Hoosier Park Racing and Casino is nearing several deadlines in preparation for the upcoming 2009 Standardbred racing season. Horsemen interested in obtaining stalls for the 80-day race meet, increased from 71 days in 2008, need to submit their stall applications by Thursday, Jan. 29.

"In order to make stall allocations, we need to get all stall application requests into our offices by Thursday, Jan. 29,” said Gregg Keidel, Standardbred racing secretary. “We are looking forward to a most exciting 2009 season, featuring our greatly enhanced program for Indiana-sired horses.”

Applications for stall space are required for both stalls in the barn area as well as horsemen wishing to ship in to race. Horsemen receiving stalls will be notified in mid-February. For more information regarding stall applications or for the upcoming race meet, contact Janice Lance, assistant racing secretary, at (765) 609-4834 until Sunday, March 1.

Keidel also intends to announce several late-closing events to be contested during the months of April and May. If approved, the entry forms should be available by Friday, Feb. 20. Nominations will not be due back into the racing office until Friday, March 20.

"I want to consult with the Indiana Standardbred Association representatives before soliciting nominations, but I will recommend some new series for 2009,” said Keidel. “I hope to include series for both green horses, including non winners of 2 pari-mutuel races and non winners of 4 pari-mutuel races. Also, I’d like to offer some claiming series for horses ranging in claiming prices of $5,000, $10,000, and $20,000.”

The barn area will open Saturday, March 7, and the first day of training on the track is set for Monday, March 9, pending weather conditions. The first qualifier is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10 beginning at 10 am.

Live Standardbred racing will be offered from Tuesday, March 24 through Saturday, July 11. Racing will be held Tuesday through Saturday with a first post of 4:45 p.m. except Saturday, when the first race will go to post at 12:45 p.m. Qualifiers will be held Tuesday and Friday each week throughout the meet.

Hoosier Park’s major racing events include the $500,000-est. Hoosier Cup slated for Saturday, May 30 and the $200,000 Dan Patch Invitational Pace, set for Saturday, June 20. The meet will conclude Saturday, July 11 featuring Indiana Sires Stakes finals and other Indiana-sired events, offering $1 million in purses. The final day of racing will be followed by a special Beach Boys concert, held outdoors in The Yard, which is adjacent to the race track. (Hoosier Park)
