Hop Sing captured the $50,000 opening leg of the Presidential Series Saturday night at the Meadowlands, overcoming rain, wind and sloppy conditions for a 1:51.2 victory over Shu Hanover.

Ron Pierce sat second on the pylons with Hop Sing, following the pace-setting Shu Hanover and David Miller through fractions of :27, :56.1 and 1:24.4. In deep stretch Hop Sing surged into the lead and scored by 1 1/4lengths. Quality Western and Yannick Gingras were third.

"There is rain and ice, and it stings when it hits you," said Pierce after the race. "This little horse raced super. He raced super last week. He just got roughed up a bit. He was good tonight and paced home real strong."

Hop Sing, a 5-year-old gelded son of The Panderosa, was claimed Dec. 3 for $125,000 by owner Richard Annunziata. This was his first win in his fifth start for his current connections since winning on Dec. 3.

"He raced good," said Ettore Annunziata, the owner's father and the pacer's trainer. "He's been knocking on the door the past couple of starts."
