Horseman Gary Baker, who had been suffering with ALS (Lou Gerhig's disease) the last few years, died Sunday night at age 60. During his illness he lived with his close friends Steve and Robin Arnold.
Baker trained horses for the Arnolds and others, spending the winter months at South Florida Training Center. He was a major force in the selection of Donato Hanover, and last fall Baker traveled to Lexington with the Arnolds to watch Donato, who the Arnolds owned in partnership with Baker's close friend David Scharf, along with others, compete in the Kentucky Futurity.
Baker grew up in White Plains, NY, just north of Yonkers Raceway. One day he got on a bus and went to Jerry Silverman's Stable to apply for a job. "I gave him a job," recalled Silverman. "He always made a great appearance, and was a diligent worker. He applied himself with fervor and a quick learner. He wound up with a good feel for the game, and he loved his horses."
Funeral services for Baker were scheduled for Tuesday at noon in Mount Vernon, NY.
