A family fund to help with college expenses is being organized by Kamal's longtime friend Jim Winske.
Kamal died at the Albany, N.Y., Medical Center, surrounded by his wife, Karen, daughter Melissa, and longtime friends.
The resident of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. had battled head injuries for many years which were result of racing accidents. He was a driver-trainer and raced on the New England circuit for many years before settling in Saratoga Springs. During his career he compiled 2,193 wins and was named to the Wall of Fame at Plainridge Racecourse.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., Kamal was the son of Albert and the late Marie Goulian Kamal of Methuen, Mass. He began his racing career in New England and raced in New Jersey and New York as well. He last raced on July 30, 1998, and trained for a year before medical problems forced him to give it up.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Kamal is survived by his brothers Alan and Robert.
