Published reports Wednesday state the Harness Horse Association of New York (HHANY) has filed a $250,000 lawsuit against Vernon Downs to make up for lost revenue from last year when track owner Jeff Gural canceled the last four days of racing. “If you have a contract, you abide by the contract,” Joe Faraldo, serving as HHANY attorney, was quoted as saying. “I just can’t have sympathy for someone who breaks an agreement.” Gural responded by saying that the horsemen should take into consideration that the track lost about $10 million last year and that he could have kept the site shuttered instead of re-opening it; the track is scheduled to open for live racing April 18. “We all agree I made a bad business decision, but it would seem his members are the main beneficiaries of it,” Gural was quoted as saying.
