Horsemen suspended in NY

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board announced on Friday that it has suspended the racing licenses of Thoroughbred participants Gerald Uvari and Gregory Martin and harness driver Rene Poulin based upon allegations set forth in an indictment released Jan. 13 by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

According to the indictment, Uvari was the boss of "the Uvari Group," and an associate of the Gambino crime family. The Uvari Group allegedly was a conspiracy of 15 partners that operated an illegal gambling business. The indictment alleged that Martin and Poulin participated with a member of the Uvari Group to fix a horse race at Aqueduct on Dec. 18, 2003, by giving a horse trained by Martin a performance-enhancing substance. Harness driver Rene Poulin pleaded not guilty Thursday night to federal gambling, horse doping and fraud charges in Manhattan Federal Court, according to a report in Friday's New York Daily News. The charges were the result of a federal investigation that netted 17 people allegedly involved in an illegal sports betting operation that took in more than $200 million over four years.

Uvari has been licensed by the board as a Thoroughbred owner since 1992. Martin has been licensed as a Thoroughbred trainer since 2001 and as an authorized agent since last August. Poulin has been licensed as a harness driver since 1988.

A hearing is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the board's Albany office.
