The Times Union of Albany has reported at least 30 horses were able to escape a barn fire at Saratoga Harness Raceway early Friday morning. The fire started around 6 a.m. in Barn 15, beginning in a tack room before moving into the attic.
Saratoga Springs firefighters were able to contain the blaze by 7 a.m. The firefighters, along with track security guards and horsemen helped evacuate the horses, none of which reportedly suffered any injuries. One firefighter told the Times Union that there was "probably less than 25 percent damage to the barn." One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation but was not transported to the hospital.
"The cause of the fire was electrical and believed to be accidental at this time,”Saratoga Springs police Lt. Robert Jillson said Friday morning. "The investigation will continue and is still open.”
According to the report, the barn did not have a sprinkler system.
