House passes slaughter bill

The U.S. House of Representatives passed by a vote of 263-146 a bill that would end horse slaughter for human consumption in this country. The bill will now go to the Senate for a vote before heading to President George W. Bush for his signature to become law.

There were two amendments proposed to alter the bill but both were defeated. If the bill becomes law, three horse slaughter plans in the the U.S.--two in Texas and one in Illinois--would be forced to shut down. Meat from those horses was primarily sold overseas.
