Hudson Filly elims held

A pair of formful females strolled home Saturday night in the $20,000 eliminations of the Hudson Filly Trot at Yonkers Raceway with Queen Serene and Hidden Viggorish reaching the winner's circle.

Queen Serene, trained and driven by Trond Smedhammer, won her elimination by two easy lengths in 1:58. Fresh off her Matron romp at Dover, this was “Serene’s” third consecutive victory and seventh in 17 seasonal starts. The daughter of Dream Vacation is knocking on the $400,000 seasonal earnings door for owner Timo Panula.

Hidden Viggorish and trainer-driver Brian Zendt crushed their four foes by 7¾ lengths in the second Hudson trial. The daughter of SJ’s Caviar,a $30,000 supplement, four turns in 1:57.4. She has now won 10 races in succession, hitting town after crushing the American National crowd last weekend at Balmoral.

“She’s a freak,” Zendt said after naming the margin of victory. “She doesn’t train too much, doesn’t warm up much and only knows one way to race. So far, it’s worked out pretty well for us.”

Unraced at two, Hidden Viggorish is 12-for-14 in ’06, with earnings in excess of $246,000. Both Queen Serene and Hidden Viggorish caused a minus pool, returning a scant $2.10 to win to their respective races.

The $330,476 final of the Hudson Filly Trot goes next Saturday night, along with Glidemaster’s attempt at the Trotting Triple Crown in the $728,000 Yonkers Trot, the $546,830 Messenger Stakes—final jewel of the Pacing Crown—and $291,456 Lady Maud Pace (3-year-old fillies). (Yonkers)
