Huston to call Grey Jug

October 17, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Monticello Raceway’s 19th Annual Little Grey Jug on Monday, Nov. 6, will emulate the event from which it was spawned, “the renowned Little Brown Jug”, when the voice of “The Jug,” world-class announcer and Hall of Famer, Roger Huston, travels to the Mighty M to provide the race calls for the event which is limited to gray-colored pacers.

“We’re really looking forward to having Roger here for our Little Grey Jug.” noted track general manager Shawn Wiles. “I don’t believe that there is anyone in harness racing who is not familiar with Huston and as the voice of the Little Brown Jug his race calls are known throughout North America.”

Huston has been the race announcer at the Little Brown Jug in Delaware, Ohio for nearly 40 years, and he is also the race caller at his home track, The Meadows in Meadow Lands, Pa. Huston has called races at more different raceways in North America than any other harness racing announcer in the history of the sport.

Even though Huston’s appearance will be a major coup, Eric Warner, Monticello’s director of racing, still has to come up with enough gray or roan-colored pacers to fill the Little Grey Jug.

“As I see it, we only have a few gray-colored pacers racing here with us at this time and I could certainly use a lot more in order to fill our Grey Jug,” Warner said. “We’re offering a $7,500 purse for the Little Grey Jug and $5,000 for the Little Grey Mug, but should we get a field of high-caliber pacers we will increase the purses accordingly.”

In the past the Mighty M has always had at least two divisions and on given years there were even three races for the grays. However, every year is different and Warner is currently in dire need of gray-colored pacers.

Anyone with a gray or roan pacer who is interested in racing in Monticello’s Little Grey Jug or in the Little Grey Mug, is urged to contact Warner at Monticello Raceway by calling (845) 795-4100 ext. 557. Or they can contact the track's publicity office at extension 455. (Monticello)
