Hypnotize noses out J Lo Hanover at Pompano in 1:53

Hypnotize ($8.80) got the best of rival J Lo Hanover in posting a nose victory to win the $16,000 Mares Open Pace Friday at the Isle Pompano Park in 1:53.

Driver Dan Clements, who sat a pocket trip and followed race favorite J Lo Hanover and Kevin Wallis from the start, was able to barely find clearance along the rail in deep stretch for the victory. Lucy Lucy (Anthony Napolitano), who was grinding it out first-over, had Hypnotize boxed in down the stretch, finished third.

Trained by Jim Mattison, it was the seventh win on the year for Hypnotize, a six-year-old mare by Artiscape, who now goes over the $300,000 mark in career earnings. The Mattison, Diffenback and Mack, Jr. Stables own Hypnotize.

Florida Sire Stakes Champion, Alice Springs, saw her six-race winning streak snapped as she finished fourth in the third race $7,000 fillies and mares pace.

Sent off as the 3/5 favorite, having won 18 of 19 career starts, Alice Springs had the lead for driver Wally Hennessey coming down the stretch in her first start against older mares, but faded at the wire as It’s The Papergirl ($15.20), who was in last place at the half mile, came first-over and grinded it out for a three-quarter length triumph for trainer/driver Bruce Ranger. The time of the race, 1:53.4, was a lifetime mark for It’s The Papergirl, who is owned by the Fred Monteleone Stable and Salvatore Promuto of Pompano Beach. (Pompano)
