Hypnotize upsets at PPk

Hypnotize, a 29-1 longshot, upset the field in the $10,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace at Pompano Park on Friday night, sweeping three-wide on the final turn for driver Joe Pavia Jr. to win in 1:54.3.

The 10th race feature started off with Golden Falcon N, driven by David Ingraham, shooting to her customary early lead, with Hypnotize in the pocket seat, but that was only for the eighth of a mile. Driver Bruce Ranger had Townline Lily in high gear and they took the early lead away from Golden Falcon N before the opening quarter mile was completed in :28.3.

They then raced Indian file past the half-mile mark, in :57.3, and then to the three-quarters in 1:26.2. Pavia then started to fan out with Hypnotize on the final turn, and that flushed Golden Falcon N and forced Pavia to go three-wide with Hypnotize as they reached the top of the stretch.

But Hypnotize had the race leaders measured, and under strong urging from Pavia came home a winner by three-quarters of a length. Townline Lily was second and a late-closing Wilma Hall (Brett Miller) finished third.

It was the second-straight win and seventh victory this year for Hypnotize, a 4-year-old mare by Artiscape trained by Jim Mattison and owned by the Diffenback, Mack, Jr., Mattison, and Diffenback Stable. (Pompano Park press release)
