Iceland is hot in Anniversary Trot

Iceland, a 5-year-old son of 2001 Hambletonian winner Scarlet Knight, won the biggest race of his career on Wed. Aug. 19th at Solvalla in Sweden when he nosed out French horses Igor Font and Quarcio du Chene in the Anniversary Trot.

In the past, the Anniversary Trot was typically raced about the same time as the Hambletonian, but it was moved to a later date this year to avoid scheduling conflicts with the Hugo Abergs Memorial. It is also now only open to five year olds. With driver Orjan Kihlstrom in the bike for trainer-owner Stefan Melander, Iceland took the overland route and prevailed in a three-horse photo at the wire. The race, which is worth about $133,000 to the winner is the most prestigious thus far in his career. Covering 2,140 meters or about 1 1/3 miles, Iceland was timed in a mile rate of 1:57.1
