Idea for NJ purchases

Return Home
January 08, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

A letter published on pressofAtlanticCity.com Sunday had an interesting proposal in that it called for the Atlantic City casinos to purchase the New Jersey racetracks in an effort to block them from adding slot machines. The writer pointed out that the casinos have already subsidized the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park with $86 million over the past four years.

“The lesser of two evils would be to simply purchase the tracks,” stated the letter. “Purchasing racetracks would give the horse-racing industry the necessary purse structure for them to be competitive with neighboring states and create a healthy horse-racing environment again. The state would get its needed tax revenue from the VLTs. The casino industry would not have to fear competition from VLTs at the local tracks since they would be receiving revenue from them.”
