Ideal Newton, getting a perfect trip by Ron Pierce, never left the rail in winning the $250,792 James M. Lynch Memorial Pace Saturday afternoon at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Getting away from the No. 2 post, Ideal Newton took the nine-horse field to the first split in :26.4 before giving way to favorite Native Bride (Joe Pavia Jr.) near the three-eighths pole. Native Bride then stayed on the lead, getting to the half in :54.3 and three-quarters in 1:22. Pierce quickly went into the passing lane at the top of the lane and outpaced Respectable (Yannick Gingras) to the wire, winning by a half-length with the timer reading a career-best1:50.2. Respectable was sitting fourth for three-quarters of the race before getting edged out at the wire. Third went to Lightning Glory (Daniel Dube) with Native Bride a disappointing fourth. Native Bride was coming off four consecutive wins at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs with one of those being a 1:51.3 in the Lynch elimination race the previous week. “I may have overdriven her a little bit in her prior two races,” said Pierce of Ideal Newton. “I wanted to give her a good trip today and it worked out well. We took the shortest way around the track and had a lot left coming down the stretch. She is a pleasure to drive.”
The win for Ideal Newton, a 3-year-old Western Ideal filly, was her fifth in 13 starts with four seconds. She is owned by Adam Victor &Son Stable LLC of New York, N.Y. and trained by Noel Daley. (Pocono Downs)
