I gave you my word she'd win with an inside post

What happened to I Give Youmy Word when she finally drew inside after five straight outside draws? She won! A field of mostly conditioned pacers, racing for a purse of $3,000, were featured at Cal-Expo on Thursday night, in which I Give Youmy Word was fastest of all.

Coming away fourth from post position three in the field of seven for driver Bruce Clarke, I Give Youmy Word remained in the clean-up spot through first-half fractions of :28.4 and :58. Now moving uncovered at the five-eighths-mile pole and responding to her earplugs getting popped just past that juncture, the 3 year old got pushed three wide a bit by Mamahaswhiskerstoo (Steve Wiseman) at the three-quarter pole, timed in 1:26.4. But Clarke wasn't concerned.

"At the top of the stretch when I tucked back in behind Mamahaswhiskerstoo, I was pretty confident that I had it won because my filly had a lot of pace," stated Clarke.

Wasting no time and moving three wide with three-sixteenths of a mile to go, I Give Youmy Word responded willingly when asked.

"She was strong through the lane and is like the Dragon Again horses I train in that they like to finish and get home."

Closing in determined fashion to get up in the shadow of the wire, the David Neumeister owned and Bob Johnson-trained sophomore won ($12.00) by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:55.1, a lifetime mark. Mamahaswhiskerstoo was a good second, and I Was The One (Gilbert Herrera) rallied nicely to be another 1 1/4 lengths farther back in third.

"She raced very well," concluded Clarke. (Cal Expo)
