The Illinois Racing Board on Tuesday approved by a vote of 7-0 to adopt the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium’s anabolic steroid model rule, which will take effect May 1 for both Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds. However, testing currently is not scheduled to begin until Sept. 1, which will provide for the ability to secure funding for the tests that will be conducted by the University of Illinois-Chicago’s forensic toxic laboratory. Published reports state that the instrument to be used for steroid testing costs $248,000, although the college will be able to lease it for three years. Annual testing costs are projected to be between $350,000 and $500,000.
