Joe Blocker, a longtime leader on the Indina harness racing scene, died Friday, May 2, at age 80 in his hometown of Goshen.
Blocker bred, raised and raced Standardbreds and spearheaded bringing harness racing at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair. He served on the Fair Board as director from 1976-95 and was president of the Fair Board in 1970. In 1995 he was grand marshal of the fair parade.
Blocker also served as a direcor and chairman of the Indiana Standardbred Association and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1999.
In addition to raising Standardbreds, Blocker served in the US Air Force and owned and oeprated Blocker-Harris Funeral Home in partnership with Charlie Harris, serving Goshen-area families until the business was sold Gregory Hartman in 1997. Blocker also owned Maple City Moving and Storage.
Blocker is survived by two daughters, Kathy Smith of Kingsley, Mich., and Jeanne Ann Peed of Bourbon, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Nancy Immel of New Paris, Ind., and Jennifer Rowdabaugh of Elkhart; a stepson, Robert L. Wilson of Goshen; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services wer scheduled for Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Goshen.
Memorial donations may be made to the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, the Goshen Noon Kiwanis Club, or the Goshen First United Methodist Church.
