Indiana Sire Stakes held

April 08, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Joe Putnam and Nowthat'saplanman remained in the pocket until the stretch drive, at which point they pushed past Townline Roll On and driver Don Eash and won the first of two Indiana Sire Stakes, both of which were non-betting races at Hoosier Park Friday night.

Putnam and Nowthat'saplaman raced in the second spot for the first three-quarters of the mile, and it wasn't until the stretch that Putnam and Nowthat'saplanman made their move to the outside, and went on and won by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:54.3.

"He (Nowthat'saplanman) is a very nice, strong colt," Putnam said. "This was a good mile tonight, since the track is sloppy."

Nowthat'saplanman, a 3-year-old son of The Wrath Of Pan, has shown early success by having won 10 of his first 13 starts. He is also two for two this year at Hoosier Park, where he has won $11,000. In his career he has earned more than $43,000. Nowthat'saplanman is owned by Brenda Conkright and Merle Yoder.

Finishing second was Townline Roll On, and Genuine Mattjic and driver Trent Bates finished third.

Five horses went to post in the second division, in which Model Rellim and driver Neil Coleman waited patiently and made their move in the stretch, and won in 1:56.4, a neck in front of Electric Time and driver Doug Rideout. Sun Set Acres Troy, with Jay Cross in the sulky, finished third.

The $6,000 first-place check pushed Model Rellim's lifetime earning to more than $20,000 for his owner, Izora Shoffner of La Porte, Ind. and trainer Clarence Shoffner.

"He (Model Rellim) won a couple legs of the Sire Stakes last year, but he was a big, overgrown colt and had some muscle soreness," Shoffner said. "We gave him a couple of months off and brought him back this winter at Hawkinsville, Ga. He's been training well." (Hoosier Park)
