With slots-enhanced purses and a breed development program that recently announced it will sweeten an already lucrative pot to the tune of $2.5 million next year, interest in the Indiana harness racing couldn’t be higher. The renewed focus on the Hoosier State was reflected in yearling prices at Indiana Standardbred Sale Company’s Select Sale, held Saturday, October 10 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. All told, the sale posted a 10 percent increase over 2008 business levels.
This year, Indiana Standardbred Sale Company sold 120 yearlings for a gross of $921,950. The $7,683 per yearling average was up from the $6,970 averaged by 115 yearlings sold in 2008. A total of seven yearlings brought bids of $20,000 or more, and the median price rose to $5,700, up from $5,000 last year.
The activity was paced by sale topper American Beach, which sold for $30,000. From the first crop of Jate Lobell stallion Allamerican Captor, the colt was purchased by Doug Rheinheimer’s Dojea Stables. The yearling, out of Jenna’s Beach Boy mare Armbro Beach, was consigned by Parkstone Farm of Allendale, Mich.--By James Platz
