Instant racing in Ohio?

Return Home
March 23, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

A bill that would allow an unspecified amount of Instant Racing Machines—video games which use previously-run races and are considered pari-mutuel—has been introduced in the Ohio House of Representative and Senate. The machines were first introduced at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas and met with great success.

The bill provides for the Ohio State Racing Commission having the ability to allow a racetrack to operate the Instant Racing Machines on live racing days, with 12 percent retained by the racetrack. Twenty percent of that would go to the state; 19 percent would go toward purses; one percent would go to the racing commission; and 60 percent would be kept by the racetrack.

The 19 percent for purses would be divided equally between Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, with the Standardbred industry directing their funds to breed development, health and benevolence programs and a fund for county fair racing.
