Irvine in car accident

March 31, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

According to a story published in the Anderson Herald Bulletin Thursday, March 30, Don Irvine Jr., Hoosier Park's six-time leading driver, was involved in a bizarre series of events March 26 that left his 2002 Dodge embedded in an Anderson residence. Alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The story stated that Irvine "drove his truck into a pole, then a brick sign and finally stopped after he crashed into a house..." There were no injuries to occupants inside the house, and Irvine sustained only a cut lip.

"The first call came in at (4:39 p.m.) on the 26th," Anderson Police Department Lt. Janice Songer told the Herald Bulletin. "A lady called in saying she had just seen a truck hit a pole at 40th and Main streets and left the scene. The caller followed the truck and watched him then strike the Buckingham Estates brick sign at Buckingham and Main. After striking the sign, he proceeded to drive into the condo and into (a house at) 12 Abbey Court."

According to the newspaper story the 55-year-old reinsman was arrested and preliminarily charged with leaving the scene of an accident as well as operating while intoxicated. Both charges are Class A misdemeanors.

"He (Irvine) was staggering and officers smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverages on his breath," Songer said in the article. "He failed all field sobriety tests. He tested .29 on the Blood Alcohol Content test. There was an open bottle of whiskey in the vehicle."
