One of the biggest winners in Europe last weekend carries the blood of a legendary American trotting mare.
Mago d’Amore won the 99,000 euro Gran Premio Citta di Turin on Sunday, April 11. He is a 4-year-old son of the leading Italian stallion Lemon Dra (Sharif di Iesolo, a son of the Victory Song-stallion Quick Song) and his dam is Do It Wise.
Do It Wise is a daughter of Donerail and the Giant Victory matron Agilita. Agilita’s dam is Augusta, a daughter of Hickory Smoke and Cassin Hanover.
Hickory Smoke won the 1957 Hambletonian and Cassin Hanover finished third in the race. Later they united in the breeding shed at Hanover Shoe Farms and produced the great international performer Elma.
Augusta was a later foal of Hickory Smoke and Cassin Hanover. She in turn produced Boleyn, the dam of the top stakes fillies Tarport Lizzy and Chickadee Newton.
Hickory Smoke and Cassin Hanover also teamed up for Dame Cassin, the dam of Buck Newton and Sonoran Sunrise.
Back to Mago d’Amore, he has a record of 1:55.3 and earnings of almost $250,000, with more stakes opportunities to come this year.
Swedish driving ace Orjan Kihlstrom made the trip to Italy to drive the horse in the Gran Premio Citta di Turin for the Gubellini Stable. Kihlstrom used an aggressive drive to take control of the race, which had a 17-horse field, and then opened up in the homestretch to score.
