Jaavo's Girl wins O'Brien

May 11, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The weather was not kind all night at Saratoga Gaming and Raceway Thursday as thunderstorms pelted the half-mile oval throughout the evening. However, the rain let up just as the fillies and mares hit the track for the final of the Battle of Saratoga #1: the $48,100 Virginia O’Brien Pacing Series.

Post-time favorite Jaavo’s Girl took advantage of her inside post position draw to easily grab the lead. Western Miracle, also leaving from the gate, tried to make a bid for the top but it was not to be as the mare had no choice but to hang outside as frontrunner Jaavo’s Girl refused to yield.

From there it was all Jaavo’s Girl until the stretch when she had to fight off a surging Kyoto’s Express on her outside and an equally game Tevya’s Trick on her inside. But the 4 year old did not give in, winning by a head in 1:57.2 over Kyoto’s Express and Brian Allen. Tevya’s Trick was disqualified from third for a lapped on break at the wire, bumping fourth-place finisher Romantic Adventure up to third.

The series final marks the third straight win for Jaavo’s Girl. Trained by Gerald Sarama and owned by the J.M.L Stables of Florida, Jaavo’s Girl sports a record of 10 top-three finishes in 16 attempts. (Saratoga)
