Jack Flanigen hits win 3,000

Reinsman Jack Flanigen notched career win 3,000 when he guided Townline Powerful to victory in the third race on Friday Night at Batavia Downs Gaming.

The 41-year-old Flanigen was able to workout a textbook, second-over trip with Townline Powerful. He then tipped his charge three deep at the top of the stretch and powered on past a first over Y Z Two Fifty to reach the milestone.

Jack Flanigen won his first career drive but it didn’t come in Western New York, it was at Lake Shore Meadows, in Erie, Pa. He sat behind a horse named Mighty Mite for trainer Jim Crossan.

By 1990 Jack was one of the most sought-after drivers on the Western New York harness racing circuit.

During the '90s he drove in 11,899 races and won 2,279 of them. His best year was 1996, when he brought home 271 winners. During his career the horses he has driven have earned more than $6.5 million.

In 2001 Flanigen began a second career, working full-time for the New York State Department of Transportation, as a truck driver.

Flanigen doesn’t drive as much as he did during the ‘90s but still averages more than 600 drives a year. He has won 81 races in 2007, and is currently in fifth place in the Downs drivers’ standing, with 31 winners.

Jack Flanigen doesn’t know how much longer he will be sitting in the sulky but said “as long as purses stay good I will keep on driving.” (Batavia)
