Jack Landis, 84, of West Palm Beach, Fla., who won the 1982 Kentucky Futurity with Jazz Cosmos, died Monday, March 22.
Jazz Cosmos 3, 1:55 ($701,568), also captured a heat and finished second in summary in the 1982 Hambletonian at the Meadowlands. Racing under the name of Sunbird Stable, Landis also campaigned Why Not 4, 1:56.4 ($823,108) and Nearly Perfect 4, 1:54 ($630,327). His primary trainers were Joe Caraluzzi and Mickey McNichol and Jim Gluhm. He took a great interest in breeding horses and analyzing pedigrees and bred Sunbird Groovey 5, 1:55 ($244,660).
Outside of harness racing he was a pioneer in the market research industry, creating techniques that are still used today, and founded The Landis Group. In addition, his ongoing lifetime challenge was perfecting a system that has successfully predicted shifts in the stock market.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; two children, Debbie and Steve; their spouses, Marshall and Lisa; five grandchildren, Joseph, Shayna, Vanessa, Jarred, Kevin; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Lucas.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 24, in Boynton Beach, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
