Jag's trainer fined $14,500

Swedish racing authorities have fined Christofe Gallier, the trainer of Jag de Bellouet, approximately $14,500 for Jag’s positive test in the 2006 Elitlopp. Some reports have stated the fine was in excess of $100,000. The fine was officially 100,000 Swedish kroner.

Jag de Bellouet tested positive for the anti-inflammatory diclofenac, a drug commonly used to treat arthritis. In the U.S. a diclofenac positive would be considered a Class 4 violation by the Associations of Racing Commissioners International, in the same category as bute and banamine.

Since Jag de Bellouet won the Elitlopp, he also forfeited the winner’s purse, which was about $350,000.

Let’s Go, the second-place finisher in the 2006 Elitlopp, also tested positive after the race. His sample showed Etacryn, which is used to treat heart and blood pressure problems in humans.

Let’s Go’s trainer, Holger Ehlert, was fined 200,000 Swedish kroner, or about $29,000, for his horse’s positive.

The Swedish authorities said Ehlert’s fine was higher than Gallier’s because Ehlert’s horses earned substantially more money than Gallier’s in 2006.

Gallier’s attorney has said his client is considering appealing the penalty.
