Freehold Raceway played host to a pair of $137,375 James Dancer Memorial splits for sophomore pacing colts Saturday afternoon, October 11. Sailing Cruise nipped favorite Bullville Powerful in the first division in 1:51.4 while Brother Ray claimed the second split in 1:51.3 Yannick Gingras and Bullville Powerful gunned to the lead from the outside post in the first division as Sailing Cruise and Jim Pantaleano settled for a pocket trip after starting from the rail. The favorite established fractions of :27, :55.1 and 1:23.2 for Gingras before coming under fire from Sailing Cruise in the stretch. The Riverboat King colt, trained by Michael Peterson, pulled the pocket and overtook the leader on the outside, finishing a neck in front at the wire. Dragon King and David Miller were third. Owned by Peterson and George Zitone, Sailing Cruise was tabbed the fourth choice by bettors. The winning time established a new lifetime best for the colt, who has earned nearly $230,000 this season and more than $287,000 in his career. Bred by Oren Stevens, the sophomore is out of Sportsmaster mare Mattie McCheese. Brother Ray earned his victory in the second division the hard way, moving first up for Jason Bartlett nearing the half and grinding out a one-length win over second choice Blueridge Western. Favorite Rudy Rednose and Brian Sears were third. Starting from post three, Brother Ray got away fourth as Jo Pa’s Wild Card and Rudy Rednose took turns on the lead. Bartlett moved the Dragon Again gelding as the field reached the half-mile station in :56, advancing to second by the three quarter pole (1:23.3). Brother Ray and Rudy Rednose engaged in a spirited battle rounding the last turn and into the stretch, with the Ken Rucker-trained entry prevailing. Owned by Robert Feldman, Howard Taylor and Niss Allen Inc., Brother Ray collected his sixth win in 17 seasonal starts. The sophomore has earned just over $104,000 for his connections in 2008.
