Jeff James won the Michigan Legends Driving Competition at Hazel Park Raceway Tuesday night, winning the first of three races with Crossing Jordan, a horse trained by Paul Kennedy Jr., who James drove for while he competed full time. James, who won his 4,811th career race, edged Chris Boring and Ron Wrenn, who won the other two contest races and ultimately finished tied for second.

Although the drivers were to keep their fees for the night, they banded together and donated all the money to the family of fellow driver Randy Kerr, who is battling cancer.

“I think that was the right thing to do, all things considered,” James told harnessracing.com Wednesday morning. “We all feel pretty bad for him as it’s a pretty tough situation.

“The night was a lot of fun and pretty cool. With all those guys there a lot of stories were told. It was really nice.”

Other drivers who competed were Dan Johnson, Eddie Morgan Jr., Frank O’Mara, Lee Sattelberg, Tom Merriman and Merritt Dokey, who filled in for multiple-time Hazel Park dash champion Bill Gale, who Hazel Park assistant race secretary Denny Walton said was feeling the effects of the heat and decided to sit out.
