Jamieson sets new Canadian record

A six-win performance on Thursday afternoon at Flamboro Downs vaulted Jody Jamieson into the history books as the leading single-season Canadian dash-winning harness driver of all time.

Jamieson entered the day four wins shy of the previous mark of 739 set by Mark MacDonald in 2006. He won three of the first four races on the afternoon before equaling the mark in race seven with pacing filly Maiden Breaking. Jamieson then set the new standard with a victory in race 11 behind race favorite Wild Heart in gate-to-wire fashion. He also won the final race of the afternoon with Cambar for good measure.

"There’s definitely some relief to have it (the record chase) over and now I just want to build on it and set a bar that will be even higher for the next guy to reach," said Jamieson just prior to the Thursday night card at Woodbine. "I’m proud of the accomplishment but I’m sure I won’t fully appreciate it until I’ve had time to sit back and reflect on it."

Despite reaching his goal, Jamieson has no plans to slow down for the remainder of the season. In fact, he was right back to work on Thursday night at Woodbine where he was scheduled to drive in all 12 races on the program.

Jamieson is also on pace to easily capture his second consecutive Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) driver's title and is a leading candidate for O'Brien Award honours as Canada's Driver Of The Year.

"I’m going to race right up until the 29th of the month and try to win as many races as I can. I know it’s a longshot, but I may even be able to take a run at 800. After that, I'll take a vaction with the family for about a month and recharge the batteries.

"This certainly wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous support I’ve received all year from the owners, trainers, grooms, drivers, the racetracks and of course my friends and family. It has been a lot of work but it was worth it in the end."

Lifetime, Jamieson sits with 5,026 wins and about $65 million in purse winnings to his credit. (WEG)
