Janet Hinshaw dies

Janet Anne Hinshaw, of Richland, Iowa, the wife of former USTA director Kermit Hinshaw, died July 22, 2009, at Hospice of Davis and Wapello Counties in Ottumwa. She was 84.

Mrs. Hinshaw was born Jan. 24, 1923, near Richland, the daughter of Loraine J. and Ruby C. Reeder Trigg. She married Kermit L. Hinshaw on Oct. 5, 1941, in her mother’s home in Richland.

Mrs. Hinshaw’s family moved to Ollie while she was very young, and she graduated from Hedrick High School in 1940. She worked as a telephone operator prior to her marriage. She and her husband owned and operated a farm, gas station, bulk fuel plant, feed store, and restaurant.

They also raised champion Standardbreds, with the best known being Jodevin 2,1:59 ($60,273), the 1976 Two-Year-Old Colt Trotter of the Year.

Mrs. Hinshaw was a member of Woolson Friends Church of Richland, Women’s Christian Temperance Union, United Society of Friends Women, Christian Harness Horse Association and Star Country Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, John (Reka) and Korwin (Judi); daughters, Emily (John) Emonin and Sallie (Terry) Hayes; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Grace Trigg and Harriet “Peggy” Kavanagh. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William “Bill” Trigg and Paul Trigg.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, at Woolson Friends Church near Richland, with Pastor Harlan Van Voorst officiating. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery in Richland. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Gould Funeral Home in Richland, with the family present from 6-8 p.m.
