Jans Luck pulls upset in Trillium

Jans Luck posted her second consecutive win in the Trillium Series with an upset victory in Thursday night's $73,373 contest on opening night of the fall meet at Woodbine Racetrack.

Steve Condren guided the 3-year-old daughter of Camluck- Jans Scooter to an off-the-pace score in 1:54.1 over a Woodbine oval that was rated good. The filly plowed her way through a strong headwind in the homestretch to haul down Canadette and Appleoosa Hanover. Race favourite Milliondollarsmile made a break at the start and finished last in the field of eight.

“We were chasing Milliondollarsmile, but she had a little bit of bad luck at the gate,” said driver Steve Condren. “The track is a bit deep, and there is a pretty good headwind tonight. It worked out the way I thought it would, they raced pretty hard and my filly had a good kick off her trip. John (trainer John Pentland) has done a good job to get her to the end of the season.”

Jans Luck had never won at Woodbine prior before and became more familiarized with the 7/8's-mile strip earlier in the day when she jogged on the harness track prior to the afternoon Thoroughbred program.

“She’s had some troubles out of the retention barn this year, and I talked it over with Blair Burgess about it,” said trainer John Pentland. “Jogging them earlier in the day seems to work with tie up candidates. She’s had some tie up problems. She showed some promise last year, but she’s really come around this year. Both her and Luck Of Michelle are safe for the Superfinals.”

With Thursday's win, Jans Luck improved her seasonal record to four wins in 18 starts for the CJs Stable Inc. of London and Nathalie Pentland of Dorchester, Ontario. Her 2007 bankroll now stands at more than $255,000.

Jans Luck is currently second behind Michelles Power in the OSS points standings and is an expected finalist in the $300,000 Super Final which goes on Nov. 10 at Woodbine. (WEG)
