Jean-Marc Gingras, the grandfather of driver Yannick Gingras, died Thursday evening after a short but sudden illness. He was 78. Yannick Gingras left Lexington late Tuesday and called off his drives Wednesday at The Red Mile to be with his grandfather, but then returned to work on Thursday in Lexington. Jean-Marc Gingras, who is Quebec trainer-driver Raymond Gingras's father, had a successful career at racetracks in Quebec and the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. He won the drivers championship at late Parc Richelieu in Montreal several times. In addition to his grandson and son Raymond, he is survived by his wife, Carmelle Desjardins; sons Claude, Marc and Martin; and his daughters Johanne and Linda.
