Driver George Brennan told harnessracing.com Tuesday morning that he is within a couple of weeks of returning to the sulky after recovering from a broken right wrist suffered in a race accident at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in late May. Brennan, 41, said he had surgery last week to take a plate out of the wrist and that he hopes to be driving soon at Harrah’s “I had surgery on Friday to take the plate out, and everything feels good,” Brennan said by phone from his home in
Brennan said he has been helping a friend train horses at a private farm since mid-August. Doctors had told him the plate would eventually be needed to be removed, and the decision was made to have the surgery now rather than later.
“Honestly, if I didn’t get the plate taken out I’d probably be back racing now,” said Brennan, who has been in physical therapy for several weeks now in preparation of his return. “But the surgeon wanted to take the plate out to give me more range of motion. He always thought he’d have to take it out. I thought it’d be a lot easier to take it now than to get back racing and in six months taking time off to do it. I might not do it then.”
Brennan admitted he missed not being in
“I missed it, but it would have been hard for me down there just sitting around not doing anything,” he said. “I was able to catch a couple of races on TV.”
Brennan had 151 wins in 2008 when he was hurt in his 1,000th drive of the year in the May 31 spill at Pocono. Overall, he has 5,409 wins and $81.6 million in purse earnings over his career. He has ranked in the top 25 among drivers in purse earnings the past 13 years, including a top-10 finish every year since 2002.
