"Is John Campbell in there?" That's what a law enforcement officer asked a group of 12 that traveled via a private plane from New Jersey to Toronto on Saturday for the North America Cup, and unwittingly created a G20 Summit security issue. The G20 Summit is being held in downtown Toronto and security was understandably extremely tight.
The group, which included the Jersey-based drivers competing on the Mohawk Saturday card, was just leaving Pearson International Airport in Toronto when their limo driver took an unplanned turn when he believed a road was closed. The road he chose to take, however, was not open to the public, and that's when the drama began.
Gordon Waterstone, who is covering the North America Cup for The Horseman And Fair World magazine, said owner Curtis Larrimore said the limo had barely turned onto a road when it was swarmed by about 30 police cars. The occupants of the limo were ordered to turn over their passports and were delayed about 45 minutes.
When the officers were advised that the group was headed to Mohawk Racetrack for the $1.5 million North America Cup, one of them quipped, "Is John Campbell here?"
Campbell, of course, was among the group, planning to drive morning-line favorite Rock N Roll Heaven.
