New Jersey's Asbury Park Press has reported that trainer Ernest Adam and owner-veterinarian Stephen C. Slender must pay a total of $68,000 each for violating New Jersey State Racing Commission rules in connection with positive tests for EPO. Their licenses have also been suspended for 13 1/2 years, the Asbury Park Press story stated. Of the $68,000, $56,000 is a fine and the additional $12,000 covers testing costs.
On May 6 New Jersey regulators announced that six horses trained by Adam and owned by Slender tested positive for Erythropoietin-Human, also known as EPO, a banned performance-enhancing substance. The tests were conducted after state officials acted on a tip and showed up at Adam's training stable at Winners International training center in New Jersey.
Frank Zanzuccki, executive director of the NJ State Racing Commission, said the fines are the highest ever issued by the state agency.
Slender is reportedly being represented by Philadelphia attorney Howard Taylor. Taylor, who is also known as a co-owner of Buck I St. Pat, is seeking a stay of the penalties in advance of an appeal, Zanzuccki said.
Zanzuccki said the six horses will be ineligible to compete until September, at which time they will be retested for banned substances. The six horses which tested positive are Art Maker, Jeremy's Successor, Jovial Joker N, JW Dutch Treat, Pacific Playboy and Western Mac. (Asbury Park Press)
