January 24, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Jim Crane, the developer of such stars as Nero, Royce, Andrel, Radiant Ruler, Judge and Black Ace, died Friday, Jan. 21, from complications due to myelodysplasia, a bone marrow malfunction. He was 82.

Mr. Crane's first horse was Dark Satin and for several years he trained at a farm in Maryland. He raced at tracks all along the East Coast before accepting a job training and driving in California. He later returned to the East Coast where he enjoyed the majority of his career success.

Mr. Crane met his wife Dorothy Elizabeth Matthews while stationed in Virginia during World War II. He is the father of four children, including daughter Bev, who was married at one time to Pennsylvania-based horseman Roger Hammer.
