JK CU Later Rallies Again

For the second week in a row JK CU Later tracked down the favored Devilfish and captured the $85,000 Clyde Hirt Series final in 1:51 Friday night at the Meadowlands. Western Shore was third.

Andy Miller sent Devilfish into the lead at the :27.4 opening quarter and took the field to the half in :55.3 and three quarters in 1:24. Meanwhile Ron Pierce and JK CU Later were in the same place at the half as last week: sixth.

Pierce tipped the 4-year-old Artiscape gelding into the outer flow third-over. But when the horses in front of him hung rounding the final turn, Pierce went four wide and it was deja vu all over again.

Devilfish has slipped away from the field at the head of the lane, but despite Miller’s urging, he couldn’t get Devilfish to the finish line quick enough and JK CU Later swept past the leader and scored by a neck.

Trained by Mickey Burke for the 3 Brothers Stable, JK CU Later scored his fourth straight victory, three of them coming this year. The winner’s share of the purse gives JK CU Later lifetime earnings of $147,611 in 29 career starts.
