Joseph A. Vaccaro, 74, one of the founding members of the New England Harness Writers Association, and its secretary-treasurer for 44 years, died early Friday morning from heart complications at the North Broward Community Hospital in Pompano, Fla.

Mr. Vaccaro was known as "Colonel Joe" during his newspaper days at the now defunct newspaper the Boston Traveler. He later wrote for the Boston Globe, and worked in the publicity department of Hinsdale Raceway. He later served 14 years as director of community services at Boston State College.

Mr. Vaccaro was a dedicated secretary-treasurer and officer of the New England chapter of USHWA and was a longtime national director. He was also one of the oldest members of the New England Turf Writers Association. In 2001 he was inducted into the New England Harness Writers Association Hall of Fame.

Mr. Vaccaro is survived by his wife, Edith, to whom he was married more than 50 years; two sons, Mark and Joseph Jr.; and two grandchildren

Funeral services are incomplete and a family service followed by cremation is being planned in the Deerfield Beach area. A service will be held at a date to be announced in Stoneham, Mass.

Condolences can be sent to Mrs. Vaccaro and family members at their Florida home at 1100 SE 13th Ave., Deerfield Beach, Fla. 33441.
