Odds-on favorite Joey The Czar (Jim Meittinis) ruled with an iron fist Saturday night, winning Yonkers Raceway's week-delayed $49,700 final of the Hopeful Pacing Series for 3-year-old colts and geldings
Leaving from post position two, "Joey" watched early as Vintage Fenom (John Sheehan) worked around Fox Valley Valkari (Jeff Gregory), grabbing command before a :27.2 opening quarter-mile. Raging Cam (Stephane Bouchard), the 68-1 rank outsider, wedged into a three-hole.
Joey The Czar then took out of fourth, finding the big chair before a :56.2 intermission. Raging Cam decided to make a second-move, which did nothing for the outer flow. Pan Grad (Jason Bartlett) was forced wide early as "Joey" reached three-quarters in 1:25.3.
Joey The Czar had a couple of lengths advantage turning for home and held his only real challenger, Vintage Fenom, at bay. "Joey" won by a length-and-a-half in 1:54.3, with Pan Grad, Fox Valley Valkari and Big Mystery (Greg Grismore) completing the cashers.
For Joey the Czar, an Art Major gelding trained by Bruce Saunders for owner Kevin Gee, he returned $3.70 for his second (consecutive) win in seven seasonal starts. The exacta paid $22, the triple returned $37.60 and the superfecta paid $76.
"He was awesome," Meittinis said. "Bruce (Saunders) did a tremendous job."
A $20,000, non-wagering series consolation was won by Totally Empressive (Bartlett) in 1:55.1. This was the first of Bartlett's seven visits to the winner's circle, including the non-bettor. He drove in all 14 purse races.
Saturday night also began the Sagamore Hill Pacing Series, an event for 3- and 4-year-old colts and geldings. Giddy Up Delight (Bartlett, $14), a 4-year-old Bettor's Delight gelding, won the fastest of the five, $12,000 events, overcoming the eight-hole in 1:55.1. Mark Ford trains the winner for owner David Shea. (Yonkers)
