Driver Marcus Johansson was injured in a one-horse accident in the ninth race at the Meadowlands baby races on Thursday, July 1. Late Thursday, Meadowlands TV host Dave Brower reportedd that Johansson suffered a ruptured spleen.
Johansson was driving the Mark Ford-trained Western Taryn in the final race of the morning when the Western Terror filly dropped suddenly to the ground at the start of the race, throwing him heavily to the track. Witnesses said the 31-year-old son-in-law of Jimmy Takter appeared to be in pain and was attended to by paramedics at the scene.
He was then transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he was undergoing surgery for internal injuries, which turned out to be to the spleen. Johansson was listed to drive On The Tab and Stimulus for Takter in Saturday’s Yonkers Trot eliminations but will now be out of action for several weeks. (harnessracing.com)
