The Canadian Sports Hall of Fame announced Tuesday that John Campbell has been named to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, joining hockey standout Mark Messier and five others who will be formally inducted in November.

Campbell, a native of Ailsa Craig, Ont., is harness racing’s all-time leading driver with purse earnings of more than $260 million. Last year he scored his 10,000th driving victory.

Campbell, 54, was the youngest ever inducted into harness racing’s Hall of Fame in Goshen in 1990 at age 35. The winner of virtually ever major stakes event the sport offers, his resume includes 42 Breeders Crown victories, six Hambletonians and seven Meadowlands Paces.

Besides Messier, Campbell will be inducted along with kayaker Caroline Brunet, hockey great Angela James, and ex-CFL and NFL quarterback Warren Moon. Ex-CFL player, coach and team general manager Hugh Campbell along with CIS coach Ken Shields will be inducted into the Hall's builder category.
