July 15, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Former professional hockey player John Ferguson, also the breeder of 1982 Little Brown Jug winner Merger and an owner of such greats as Hardie Hanover, died Saturday night after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. He was 68.

Ferguson was well known around the racetracks and the sales and well remembered if you shook his hand--he had huge hands that never failed to make his handshake memorable.

In addition to breeding and racing horses over the years, Ferguson also served as president and CEO of Windsor Raceway.

Ferguson played professional hockey with the Montreal Canadiens, playing the forward position, and helped them win five Stanley Cups. His son, John Jr., is general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A native of Vancouver, Ferguson's father trained Thoroughbreds at Exhibition Park there.

Funeral services were not determined as of Sunday.
