February 12, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

John R. Gaines, who, in addition to developing Gainesway Farm into one of the world's leading Thoroughbred establishments, was a prominent owner of Standardbreds, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky. He was 76.

Mr. Gaines and his father, Clarence F. Gaines, captured both the 1966 and 1967 Hambletonians with Kerry Way and Speedy Streak, respectively.

In addition to his direct involvement in the Thoroughbred and Standardbred breeding industry, Mr. Gaines is credited with developing the ideas for Thoroughbred's Breeders' Cup and the Kentucky Horse Park. He was also a prominent fund raiser, reportedly raising more than $100 million for education, arts and sciences and religion. A noted art collector, his acquisitions have sold for millions of dollars at Christie's and Sotherby's, including one of the last works by Leonardo da Vinci.

Funeral arrangements are pending at W.R. Milward Mortuary in Lexington.
